Default got a new car (240sx) ign. trouble

im having some weird ignition trouble im trying to find out if some of you guys may know something about it, i just got this car two days ago. the seller told me the starter was bad and maybe the battery. i found out the easy way it might be the ignition, or bad wiring.

scenarios. the cluster will only go on if the key is held to the start position. but even in the off position the stereo is on
the car wont start if i press down the clutch and turn the key all the way (its not the clutch button thing)
with the help of my friends we push started the car and held the key to the on start position and the car stayed on as long as the key was all the held all the way down. as soon as you let it go the car dies.
im trying to find out if you guys may know if its the ignition system or some faulty wiring?

any help would be appreciated

sounds like someone has F'ed up the tumbler, (probably caused by jamming something into the column that didnt belong there) and your loosing the contact made when the key is in the "on" position. sounds like the stereo problem coming on in the off position could be one in the same.

thanks, but i found out the problem if the tumbler is the little cylinder piece with the wires connected to it where the key gets inserted thats what it was. it was loose from its casing. i pushed it in and the car started with the twist of the key finally everything is good, now the problem maybe is the stereo. it might have not been properly wired thats why it stays on even after the key is removed. taking the face of turns it off. but i think my car is in good shape now. thanks again for the response.

They tapped in to a constant 12v rather than a switched. That's why it's staying on.

Find a 12v switched source, test the voltage at the ON position and also at idle to see if it stays hot, then tap it into there depending on the gauge of the wire.
